formatter.js was created for online form validation purposes.
It helps developers setup input masks, term used to describe the process of taking user input and manipulating it to be displayed using a desired format.
This technique is usually used for credit card numbers, dates, time values, phone numbers, fax numbers, email addresses and so on. Usually for text that's widely known to have a preset format.
Basically formatter.js takes a text like "XXXXXX" and as the user types it in the form field, converts it in real time to "XX-XX(XX)", or any other preset format the developer might want to use.
formatter.js will also deal with adding extra characters to the format, so the user will never have to type any of them, just the text string.
If the "persistent" configuration option is used, these extra formatting characters can even be showed at page load inside the field, letting the user know what kind of data format is used beforehand.
